The Ski Boonie

Columbia Ski Club newsletter                OCTOBER 2008

The downtown Columbia Pub Crawl is beckoning as I write this, so I’m being as brief as possible…..

If it’s the first Monday of the month, it must be time for the roaming target of a Ski Club meeting!  This time around, it’s at Ashland again.  Yep, Copper Kettle is the place to be this Monday, Oct. 6, for some good eats and a wine tasting before, during & after.  The plan for the moment, is for all attending to bring a bottle of your favorite wine to sip & share.  I’ll have some of that wonderful wine from Matt Kirby of Cooper’s Oak Winery, the Higbee winery, that we sampled at last December’s meeting.  He’s graciously donated some again this time.

As usual, we’ll meet at 6 o’clock for social and order dinners at about 6:30.

Paul Lowry of Lowlander Outdoor Adventures will be on hand this month to give a quick presentation on ski tunes and a sundry of other interests, just so you remember him.  Just bring your skis and snowboards along to the meeting for him to collect and take care of any needed tune-ups.  Any questions for him can be taken care of by calling 573-823-1080.

Thanks to Summit Lake Winery hosting us in their overflow room for September’s meeting.  We had a great crowd and a great time with food & spirits.  This ”one-time” meeting proved popular so we’ll be back there for a “second time” for our November meeting.

“THE POWER OF FOUR”

ASPEN-SNOWMASS-HIGHLANDS-BUTTERMILK

December 7-12, 2008

Got 22 signed on (so far) for the three days of early skiing in Aspen / Snowmass (with that fourth day option like last year); Folks, there’s four different mountains to ski & shred with five nights in one of the best ski towns in Colorado.  And two of us are non-skiers.  $575 is all it takes to get you there.  Once more, this one’s been very popular with the club and it’s been a deal!  Aspen Square Condominiums is simply a great place to vacation.  I’ve got 5 studios and 3 two-br condos booked so far with room for more.  It’s time for payment 2 of 3 this month.  Plan on going to ski and board at the Power Of Four Mountains and bring more bucks to the meeting on Monday.  It’s a ‘get-yourself-out-there’ trip, so after some wine, the driving arrangements could get interesting…..

Flatlands Ski Association  2009

COPPER MOUNTAIN

January 27 to February 1

Our second club trip returns to Copper Mountain from Jan. 27 to Feb. 1 2009.  Once again, there will be NASTAR amateur racing for all experience levels and ages plus FSA parties and banquet.  Flatlands is always a good time with nearly continuous activities to keep everyone busy.

Five nights lodging, a club dinner at the mountain and a pre-trip party are also included with this trip.

The cost is just $498.

Just five people signed up for the trip at our September meeting, fewer than in previous years.  An interim deposit is due to the condo the third week in October, which the trip fund doesn’t have now.  Therefore, if you intend to go on this trip your signup and trip deposit is important at this October meeting. We can cut back our committed units this month with no penalty but thereafter, penalty applies. As we cut back we lose parts of our group rates package in addition to our reserved units.  Eventually, we could get to some point where we lose the advantage of group rates, making the trip impractical.  “Group rates” are clearly the whole point of the club (beyond skiing), so again, you can see how important signup is if you are intending to do Flatlands this year.

If you haven’t signed up, the scheduled amount would be $108+$130=$238 for October.  See the flyer.

Here is the deal on joining up with the Topeka Club on their bus.  They leave Topeka on Tuesday evening Jan 27 for an overnight trip to Copper, arriving fresh as a daisy to ski the 28th.  Our plan includes a night the 27th at Copper so we will already be there, even fresher than a daisy.

They will then depart Sunday afternoon, Feb 1, 3:00 pm for the overnight drive arriving back in Topeka early early Monday morning.

The cost for the bus is $155.

I do not know for certain that our condo will let the 27th go but I assume that it can be done.  It doesn’t seem that unreasonable.  Therefore, some sort of refund for that night “should” be made back to any Ski Boonie wanting to go this route.  However, I do not anticipate that such refund would be near $155.

To be fair to the Topeka club, I will be responding to their offer later on this month.  You have a week or two to consider whether this is right for you.  After that, since it’s “first come, first  served”, the bus seats may all fill up, but more importantly, any arrangement with the condo unit needs to be made.

If you cannot sign up for the trip at Monday’s meeting you may mail your deposit, plus your club membership too, to:  (per the flyer)

And again, even though next January seems a long way off, it’s important to throw your pole into the ring so the planning can get done as early as practical.

AMTRAK TRIP

Dot Baker talked about the potentials of a train trip to Winter Park in March.  Has this captured your fancy the last few weeks?  Since things are not set at all for this trip bring your ideas to the October meeting.  Maybe some dates and times can be brought into focus to make it reality.

Playa del Carmen, MEXICO 2009

The Flatlands Ski Association has a June ’09 trip to Mexico.  It includes a direct flight from KC (MCI) to Cancun.  The captain of this affair is Kip Tevis of Kansas City & FSA President 913-631-7553 hm.  This trip is limited, and the cost is in the $1400 area, so if you have any interest at all, get a completely refundable $100 deposit in with FSA, or as always, get in touch w/ Captain Ron.  A colorful pdf flyer is attached to this newsletter and will be also provided at the October meeting.

Schedule of CSC events:

Oct 6; monthly meeting date at 6pm at Copper Kettle in Ashland

Nov TBA; Aspen pre-trip party

Nov 3; monthly meeting date returns to Summit Lake Winery

Dec 1; monthly meeting date at D Rowe’s restaurant in Columbia

Dec 7 to 12;  Aspen trip at Aspen Square Condos

Jan TBA; Holiday party

Jan TBA; “Flatlands 09” pre-trip party

Jan 27 to 31;  “Flatlands 09”, Copper Mountain Colorado

Mar TBA;  AMTRAK trip to Winter Park

Summary:  Columbia Ski Club has two trips, for mid-December and for late January booked to Colorado.  December’s Aspen/Snowmass is coming up sooner than you know it, and the annual FSA trip only 2 months later.  The other Colorado ski trip for Winter Park on AmTrak will need to be a ‘go or no’ soon!  This sounds like a great one too!
